I will destroy the Daughter of Zion,
so beautiful and delicate...
This city must be punished;
it is filled with oppression.
Are they ashamed of their loathsome conduct?
No, they have no shame at all,
they do not even know how to blush.
~Jeremiah 6
Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury, burn incense to Baal and follow other gods you have not known, and then come and stand before me in this house, which bears my Name, and say, 'We are safe'--safe to do all these detestable things? ~Jeremiah 7
God has been telling Israel and Judah for some time--through Jeremiah--that He is going to punish them for their rebellion against Him. But, what is this crazy rebellion that would tick off a God who is "loving and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in mercy..."?
This question must be asked. For, its answer can be the perfect spectacles for us to view our own cultures and lives through. What is it that makes God flare up His nostrils, so to speak, in ferocious anger against even his own 'delicate' people?
Let me compare this to a typical prayer request time from my experience. God does not cry out, as I might expect from such prayer times, "Why aren't you setting aside 30 minutes at the start of every day to meditate on my Word and thoughtfully pray through the Lord's Prayer?" Or, "Why can't you people stop enjoying the food I provide you and the provision? Why do you enjoy sex?" Or, "Why didn't you dress up in your finest clothes to meet me this morning?" Or, "You don't feel the feelings of passion for Me that I demand, so I'm going to crush you!" Etc.
No, God's focus is not on these things. They may have their place, be reflective of the problems, or even lead to the big deal. Nevertheless, God is angry because His people allow their communities to be places of oppression, stealing, perjury, adultery, and idol worship. I, Tyson Turner, can take care of daily devotions, impure motives, unpious feelings, and personal presentation. But, I cannot control society. Yet, God is telling His people that He is going to destroy them for these sins.
Oppression is wicked. Why do you not blush when you listen to the news anymore?
Oh my heart, come out and be a man. Cry out to God to remove this curse from your city, to give you eyes to weep for others' oppression and idolatry, etc. Do not be afraid to be labeled a 'liberal'--forsake your treasured delight that God delights in naval gazers.
Blush when you see "Jesus" idols and when you see politicians making promises that they do not keep. Blush here. Blush here. Blush here and cry out to God because only He can have mercy.
